About This Qualification

What is the Solar PV Service Technician Occupational Certificate?

The Solar PV Service Technician Occupational Certificate is a nationally recognised QCTO qualification at NQF Level 5 — one level above the other artisan qualifications — reflecting the technical complexity and growing importance of this occupation in South Africa’s energy transition.

At Phambili Village Campus, this qualification is delivered through our dual system block release model: combining online theory, facilitated campus sessions, hands-on solar PV workshop training, and workplace rotations with industry partners in the renewable energy sector.

South Africa is in the middle of a profound energy transformation. Eskom’s constraints, rising electricity tariffs, and the growth of independent power producers have created massive demand for qualified Solar PV Service Technicians across residential, commercial, and utility-scale installations.

Graduates of this programme leave with the theoretical understanding, practical skills, and workplace experience needed to install, commission, fault-find, and maintain solar PV systems — and the recognised qualification to back it up.

Where This Takes You

Career outcomes

Solar PV technicians are needed across residential, commercial, and utility-scale projects throughout South Africa.

🏠
Residential Solar Installer
Design, install, and commission rooftop solar systems for homes — one of the fastest-growing service segments in South Africa.
🏢
Commercial PV Technician
Install and maintain large-scale commercial solar systems for shopping centres, office parks, and industrial facilities.
Utility-Scale Project Technician
Work on South Africa’s Independent Power Producer (IPP) solar farms contributing megawatts to the national grid.
🔋
Battery Storage Specialist
Install and service battery energy storage systems (BESS) alongside solar PV — a rapidly expanding sub-sector.
🔧
O&M Technician
Operations and maintenance roles on solar farms — ongoing inspections, fault diagnosis, and system optimisation.
📋
Solar Project Supervisor
With NQF Level 5, progress into supervisory and project coordination roles leading installation teams on site.
How You’ll Learn

Your journey through the programme

Our dual system block release model moves you through four integrated phases.

💻
Phase 01
Digital Foundation
Access solar theory, electrical fundamentals, and system design principles through our online platform before campus. Cover photovoltaic physics, DC and AC systems, inverter technology, and South African grid regulations.
Self-pacedPV theoryGrid regulationsMobile accessible
🎓
Phase 02
Applied Learning on Campus
Facilitated campus sessions cover system design, load calculations, string sizing, and safety compliance. Work through real project scenarios and prepare for practical and theoretical assessments.
